It’s important to me to reclaim the word “fat.” It’s not a bad word. It’s not intrinsically insulting. All it tells you is that this person has more visible fat on her frame than a thin person does — and since in my case, that’s the plain truth, I don’t have any problem with being described that way. I have a problem with people who would describe me that way with the intention...

A Reminder to Those Who Gained Weight
loveisfluid:
I know, your body looks different. It has changed, along with your life, and your jeans fit a little more snuggly than you had anticipated. Maybe more than you like.
Maybe you hate it.
You were a size X for such a long time, so comfortable in your skin, and suddenly, you are 10, 20, 50 pounds heavier. Fatter. Sometimes, you might feel discomfort at the thought. Sometimes, it is...
Just tweeted it; might as well post it.

I’m thinking about this XXL controversy and wondering how possible it is to critique the sexual objectification of black women without, at the same time, sliding into a conservative discourse about sex and sexuality, and especially without relying on the most conservative anxieties about black girl’s and women’s sexuality. We play into that, of course, whenever we reaffirm the...

The Fat Nutritionist was the first person I read who laid out the (in retrospect totally logical) argument that all this talk about how sugar or fat or carbs are “addicting” and all this...

Fat people should never admit that they need sustenance, much less like it. Admitting that you enjoy food while fat will cause the non-fat to criticize you for being unable to control yourself around food. Especially if you have a sweet tooth or like potato chips. Things like that are only acceptable if you are not fat.
Fat people are...
Ballet Dancer Fired for Daring to Acknowledge... →
Mariafrancesca Garritano was fired last month after telling a British newspaper that her fellow dancers in the La Scala Ballet were suffering from an “anorexia emergency,” and that one in five dancers in the company was suffering from the eating disorder. The former prima ballerina also told The Observer that borderline abusive tactics were used by the company to pressure dancers to...
The Weight-Loss Drug That Wasn't →
Scientists were hoping FGF21 would be a key to lots of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. So this whole “rapid bone loss” thing is a setback for big pharma (Eli Lilly scientists published one of the first papers on FGF21, back in 2005), but also a setback for drug treatment of metabolic problems in general. That these problems are thorny is no surprise — glucose metabolism is...

I’m sure many of us have bitched, ranted and cursed about the pure fatphobia that is the lack of plus size lines in the stores of people that have them. This kind of move says “while I’d really like your dollar, I’d hate to see you in here with all the socially acceptable people” and it’s simply not okay, especially in an economy like this. While boycotting these labels might be...
