Guys Who Like Fat Chicks
By Camille Dodero Wednesday, May 4 2011From the Village Voicehttp://www.villagevoice.com/2011-05-04/news/guys-who-like-fat-chicks/
The article is an interesting read. I have mixed feelings about a lot of it, but I think it’s worth reading. I’m not super familiar with Fat Admirers, or the ins and outs of that “lifestyle”. But I am a fat woman, and I am very attracted to fat men specifically.
I have, of course, slept with slender men…but I don’t find them attractive. It is through my experience that I would more closely identify as a female who admirers fat men. I can honestly say even if I wasn’t fat, I’d still be attracted to fat men.
Kinda random thoughts, but I felt like sharing. ;)

So the bf and I had an interesting conversation via twitter (and later, text message) about this last night. At first I really wanted to hate this article, because there is so much about it that is problematic (it is extremely heteronormative, gives voice to views that are at times incredibly sexist/anti-feminist and even homophobic, etc.), but, as Chris points out, there are some not-so-bad parts, too:
it is one of the least inflammatory articles about fat people in mainstream media in awhile
it gets some of the really important things right (like why we use ‘fat’ instead of ‘overweight’)
it takes fat sexuality as a given, and goes from there (instead of being like “what?? fat people have SEX? GROSS”)
real people who have real fat sex were interviewed and treated pretty damn fairly
the representation of fat as a preference or a ‘type’ rather than a fetish seems to be pretty on point (at least for the majority of people who prefer to date fat people)
Neither of us have professed ‘types’ (bodily or otherwise), so it is interesting from an outsider’s point of view to read about people who have a legitimate sexual preference for fat bodies. It was especially interesting (and refreshing) to read about “fat admirers” (although I loathe that term) in a way that does not demonize them. This is not to say that there aren’t some really bad, gross, mean people out there ready and willing to take advantage of fat chicks, but that can be said of almost any ‘type’ of person with particular sexual preferences, really.
And frankly, if we keep talking about and focusing on the extremes (i.e. fat admirers who manipulate and prey, feeders who abuse, etc.) of fat sexuality, all we end up doing is further demonizing and marginalizing ALL FAT SEXUALITY. How is that okay? Or good? Or helpful?
